If you are invited to apply, you will receive an application form and other documents from us. You will need to complete these and return them to us. Once we have received the documents back, you will be allocated one of our experienced social workers. Submission of the documents begins the assessment process.
Stage 1 usually takes 1-2 months to complete and allows us to proceed with legally required background checks and references. These will include; personal and employment references, medical, local authority, previous agencies (where applicable) and ex partner checks. We also carry out enhanced DBS checks for all adult household members and undertake school references, if there are any school aged children in the household. We will speak to all children within the fostering family to ascertained their views. We will obtain some detailed information on your background and lifestyle so that we can assess your suitability to foster.
First for Fostering have developed a guide for supporting birth children to understand what being a foster family can involve, this will be provided to the children in the home (if age appropriate).
During Stage 1 our recruitment team will be here to guide you and answer any questions you may have.
First for Fostering know that having a strong and adaptable support network is essential for foster carers in enabling and supporting them to care for children, especially in challenging times. As part of our assessment process we will discuss prospective foster carers local support networks and we will contact them to understand and verify the support they can offer, both practically and emotionally.
Stage 2 will consist of at least 8 sessions. Most of these sessions will take place in the applicant’s home with at least one taking place within First for Fosterings premises. This will enable the applicants to become familiar with the Agency and meet with other members of our team. It is important that foster carers are comfortable and confident in working outside their own home in preparation for meetings they will be required to attend, both with and on behalf of the children they care for. Carers may be asked, as part of the process, to undertake reading or tasks in preparation for the assessment visits. The assessment sessions will be led by one of our experienced qualified supervising social workers, but will be a collaborative partnership between the supervising social worker and the fostering family.
On completion of the assessment, a panel meeting will be convened to consider approval and a recommendation will be made. Panel is a formal process, but we will ensure potential carers are welcomed and put at ease. A panel book will be available in advance or on the day for applicants to familiarise themselves with the process and also our panel members.
Our Panel Chairperson is experienced in fostering, he has chaired many fostering panels over a number of years. Having spent many years as a primary headteacher in the local area he brings a wealth of experience to the role. He will ensure the Panel runs smoothly, as well as putting prospective foster carers at their ease.
Panel will be made up of members with a diverse range of personal experiences and professional backgrounds. The panel chair will ensure all panel members are supported in sharing their views and will support the panel in coming to a recommendation.
All panel members will receive an annual appraisal and offered training.
Following panel, the recommendation alongside panel minutes will be sent to the Agency Decision Maker (ADM) who will either approve the applicant or not. If the applicant is not approved, they will have 28 days to appeal to the Independent Review Mechanism (IRM).
Once approved, new foster carers will be allocated one of our supervising social workers and a plan for training will be agreed. Foster carers are required to complete their Training and Development Standards (TDS) Workbook with the support of their supervising social worker, within the first twelve months. Alongside this they will also complete training in; Attachment, De-escalation, Safeguarding, Secure Base in Fostering and First Aid.
